THE HISTORY AND MISSION OF THE AICPA
In 1887, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) was founded to represent Certified Public Accountants profession nationally. The organization relied upon for rule-making and standard-setting, serving as an advocate before legislative bodies, public interest groups as well as other professional organizations.
The AICPA develops standards for private company audits as well as other
services performed by CPAs. It also creates and provides educational guidance materials, prepares and grades the Uniform CPA Examination and monitors as
well as enforces compliance with the profession’s technical and ethical
standards.
Upon the founding of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, accountancy, as a profession, became distinguished by rigorous educational requirements, high professional standards, a strict code of professional ethics, a licensing status and a commitment to serving the public interest.
THE MISSION OF THE AICPA
The AICPA’s mission is to provide members with leadership and the resources so they may provide the highest professional level of services to benefit their clients, employers and the public as a whole. In fulfilling its mission, the AICPA works with each state’s CPA organizations, giving priority to those where public reliance on CPA skills is the most needed and significant.
