Valerie Chamberlain
Manager, Business Management Division
The Journey
Valerie has always loved animals, horses in particular. When she was in school her parents offered to help her own her own horse, but only if she took on the many responsibilities, contributed to the costs and budgeted the money they provided. It was a great learning experience. Most of all, she had to find a way to balance time caring for the horse with school and a part-time job.
This love for animals comes from the same deep-rooted desire that Valerie has for caring for others. In fact, over the years, when Valerie has taken career tests, she has been told that she would thrive as a teacher or a nurse. As she says, “Taking care of people is what drives me. It’s in my nature.”
Valerie has been on the SPS Business Management team for many years. Not only does she love the work, she has also developed a rich depth and breadth of knowledge. As manager of the Business Management Department, Valerie also has the opportunity to share this wealth of experience with others, especially when it comes to the SPS commitment to adopting and resolving clients’ problems.
Despite Valerie’s love for her job, it’s true that she actually relishes developing spreadsheets, it’s the weekends at the stable that give her the greatest pleasure. Valerie puts it this way, “There is a certain sort of peace when I get there, a relaxation, and when it’s time to go I’d really rather just stay there and hear the rustle of horses moving about as I sleep under the stars.”
So, when you’re out in the canyons of the San Gabriel Mountains, keep an eye out for Valerie. That horsewoman riding on by might just be an integral member of your Business Management team.
